VIA Préférence members can use points to pay for:

Tickets for travel aboard VIA Rail trains purchased directly from VIA Rail
The purchase of a VIA Rail travel pass
Any baggage for which a fee applies (as per VIA Rail baggage policy)
Fees for travelling with a pet
Fees for an unaccompanied minor
Fees for two adjacent seats (to provide extra space for a passenger)
Tickets for travel aboard the Quebec-Ste-Foy shuttle purchased directly from VIA Rail

Excluded from points redemption:

Taxes and service charges
Food and beverages
The amount paid for a fare upgrade
One-time Business lounge pass for non qualifying guests available at some stations
Packaging products available at some stations
Tickets or any items purchased on board
Souvenirs from the VIA Rail boutique
Purchase of VIA Rail gift cards
Partial charters and group fares
The rail travel portion of a package trip
Rail travel purchased through a travel agency, tour operator or sales agent, whether or not part of a package trip
Tickets purchased for the Maple Leaf train between Toronto and New York
