The best part about earning points is using them for something you love―like train travel! With tickets available for less points than before and more ways to use your points, your next reward could be just around the bend.

Use fewer points when fares are lower

The number of points required for a particular trip is now based on the published fare at the time of booking, and you’ll see how many points are needed for your trip on the Review and pay screen. That means when the fares are lower, so is the number of points needed. Book early to get the most out of your points!


Redeem for tickets and optional products

Points redemption is no longer limited to tickets. You now have the option to redeem your points for products like travel passes, baggage and pets on board.

Redeem for any seat at any time

If there's still a seat available in Economy, Business or Sleeper Plus class, it's yours to redeem! And with no blackout dates, you can use your points when you want.*

Redeeming online is easy

Ready to redeem your points? You can book your trip online just like any other trip with VIA Rail and select VIA Préférence points as the desired form of payment on the Review and pay screen. That’s where you’ll see how many points are needed for your trip and you’ll be able to select the items you want to redeem with points. Plus, we’ve extended online redemption to trips outside the Corridor―on the Canadian, the Ocean and regional trains.*



We are building the foundations of tomorrow’s customer journey with the modernization of our systems, such as a new reservation system and a redesigned VIA Préférence program. These will evolve over time so that we can stay aligned with the changing needs and expectations of present and future passengers. As such, until it is adjusted in the coming months, products purchased with VIA Préférence points will require the payment of taxes in cash (station only), or by debit card (station only), credit card or gift card.** Until this is adjusted, and even though our redesigned loyalty program offers more value to our members, we will temporarily be reducing by 30% the number of points required for all redemptions made as of November 18, 2023. We will be communicating directly with our members when adjustments will be made to the program.

*Except for Prestige class redemptions, which must be booked through the VIA Customer Centre at 1-888-VIA-PREF (1-888-842-7733) or TTY 1-800-268-9503 (for persons with are deaf or hard-of-hearing). Travel must take place within 6 months of the booking and in the period from October 15, 2023, to April 30, 2024 (travel dates may vary from year to year). All Prestige class redemptions are subject to availability, and a 72-hour delay is to be expected before the final booking confirmation from a VIA Rail agent is received. Other conditions may apply.

**Applicable taxes will be calculated based on the dollar amount of the products purchased with points.
