Lost or damaged baggage

Despite our careful handling of your baggage, we trust that you will understand the following:

  • VIA Rail does not accept liability for carry-on baggage brought onto passenger cars.
  • VIA does accept limited liability for checked baggage only. This liability is limited to personal baggage - that is, to clothing, personal effects, and other articles packed for your comfort and well-being, and to articles other than personal baggage that can be carried in the baggage car.

In order for this liability to be applicable, your belongings must be transported in their original box or in a rigid container that protects them adequately.
 

VIA will not be held liable for

  • Articles intended for another person or for sale.
  • Exterior damage to the protective case which may occur in handling, such as minor scratches, nicks, marks or dirt considered as normal wear and tear.
  • Articles damaged inside any piece of baggage, if there is no visible damage to the exterior.
  • Pilfering, if the suitcase was not locked or if the box was not closed and sealed with adhesive tape
  • Damage caused to baggage carried at the owner's risk.

Compensation

For the loss or damage of: Maximum liability is:
Personal checked baggage $750 per adult traveller

$375 per child traveller

Camping equipment, outboard motors, sports equipment, musical instruments and pets $250 per adult traveller

(please note that VIA accepts no liability for bicycles not placed in a box)

Articles left in checkrooms $25 per article

 

Please count and verify your checked luggage immediately when you pick it up at destination. Any damage or loss must be reported on the day of arrival, otherwise VIA is not liable.
