Allowed as carry-on baggage

The following sports items will be accepted as carry-on baggage in the Corridor trains (Québec City-Windsor).

Folding bicycles*

A folding bicycle may be brought on board and will count as one item of the carry-on baggage allowance. The bike must not exceed 158 linear cm (61 linear in). Linear dimensions are obtained by adding the length, width and height.

Golf bags*

A golf bag may be brought on board and will count as one item of the carry-on baggage allowance.

  • One (1) golf bag containing clubs, golf balls and a pair of golf shoes counts as one (1) piece of baggage.
  • Golf clubs must be carried in a bag or case that includes a cover that prevents the clubs from falling out.

Please note that all sports bags and cases can’t contain clothing or other personal items. They must be used only to carry sports equipment.

Hockey bags*

An hockey bag may be brought on board and will count as one item of the carry-on baggage allowance.

  • Only hockey bags that meet our weight and size restrictions will be permitted as carry-on bags.
  • The bag must not exceed 158 linear cm (61 linear in). Linear dimensions are obtained by adding the length, width and height.

Skis and snowboards*

Skis and snowboards may be brought on board and will count as one item of the carry-on baggage allowance.

  • Skis, poles and snowboards must be packed in a resistant or hard shell case specifically designed for transporting such items.
  • Boots bag can also contain equipment such as helmet and goggles.

Please note that all sports bags and cases can’t contain clothing or other personal items. They must be used only to carry sports equipment.

*This policy does not apply to Renaissance cars, as there is no space to store this equipment safely on board. 

Allowed as checked baggage

Checked baggage service is available specifically on long distance routes (no connection trains). Please make sure to confirm that this service is offered on your train before its departure.

Baggage must be checked at least 45 minutes before departure at terminal stations and 30 minutes at intermediate stations. Please also be sure to confirm at what time the station opens.

For security reasons, please note that checked baggage is not allowed on board without its owner. Also, if you are planning a connection with one of our travel partners, please consult their website for information on their baggage policy.

The following items are accepted as checked baggage on trains equipped with baggage cars (Toronto-Vancouver, Montréal-Halifax, Sudbury-White River, Senneterre, Jonquière, Winnipeg-Churchill, Jasper-Prince Rupert routes)

Sports equipment

These items are allowed for a $25 fee:

  • Bicycle
  • Electric bicycle
  • Folding bicycle
  • Child bicycle trailer
  • Recumbent bicycle
  • Tandem bicycle.

These items will count as one item of the baggage allowance:

  • Golf bag
  • Skis / snowboard
  • Skateboard
  • Surfboard / paddleboard.

If the total of items carried exceeds the baggage allowance, you will have to pay an extra charge in accordance with the applicable excess baggage policy.

Recreational equipment

Items weighing more than 32 kg (70 lb) or measuring more than 180 cm (71 in) are not permitted unless they are considered oversized outdoor equipment.

If you plan to travel with an oversized sport item, please advise us by calling our customer service at 1-888-VIA-RAIL (1-888-842-7245) or TTY 1-800-268-9503 (persons who are deaf or hard-of-hearing). Please note that some items require a 48 hours' notice.

  • Canoe / Kayak ($100 fee).
  • Sailboard ($100 fee).
