What is the VIA Train-Alert Service?

By subscribing to the VIA Train-Alert Service, you will receive notifications of your VIA train’s status, service disruption or delay by email or SMS (text message).

When will I receive notification from the VIA Train-Alert Service?

During normal train operation, you will receive a maximum of two notifications per subscription:

  • You will receive a notification 60 minutes before the scheduled departure and/or arrival time of your train. You will receive this notification either when your train is on time or delayed.

  • You will receive a notification 30 minutes before the scheduled departure and/or arrival time ONLY if your train is more than 5 minutes earlier or 10 minutes later than indicated in the preceding notification.

In case of disruptions or major modifications to your trip, we wil l send you a special email and/or SMS as soon as possible.

How can I check my train status?

You can check your train’s arrival and departure status at all times by visiting viarail.ca.

How can I receive notifications from the VIA Train-Alert Service?

The VIA Train-Alert Service automatically sends notifications to users once a subscription is made.

You can choose whether you want to receive your notifications by SMS or email.

There are two easy ways to register to receive an alert:

  • You can subscribe to the VIA Train-Alert Service on the confirmation page of your booking
  • You can subscribe through the VIA Train-Alert Service sign-up form on our website—register now!

Who can subscribe to the VIA Train-Alert Service?

Passengers, family and friends can receive notifications from the VIA Train-Alert Service.

What is SMS messaging?

Short Message Service (SMS) is a text messaging service component of mobile communications systems. It uses standardized communications protocols to allow mobile phone devices to exchange short text messages. SMS messages, or texts, are often limited to 136 characters per message. For more information on how to use SMS/text messaging on your phone, please see your phone’s user manual or check your network provider.

Is the service supported by my network?

All Canadian mobile network providers offer this service to their users.

How much does it cost?

The good news is that email notifications are free. For SMS notifications, the service is provided free of charge by VIA Rail Canada; only standard text messaging rates by your cell phone carrier apply.

Is this service available on all trains?

The Train-Alert Service is only available for your trip on board a VIA Rail train in the Québec City - Windsor corridor only. The Train-Alert Service is not available on trains 1, 2, 185 and 186. You will not receive any notifications for the portion of a segment on board another mode of transportation and/or carrier service.

What do I do if I receive a SMS or email saying my train is delayed?

Before making your way to the station, we strongly suggest that you check your arrival and departure time status.

How do I cancel my alerts?

You can stop receiving notifications by texting the word “STOP” to 84222.

You can also cancel by email by clicking on the “Unsubscribe” link.
