Conditions of rail pass purchased between July 29, 2019 and January 21, 2022

TRAVEL PERIOD:

Travel is permitted for any period of 180 consecutive days. There is the possibility to choose the first date of travel within the next 330 days following purchase date.

NUMBER OF TRIPS:

10, 20, 50 and 100 credits are available when purchasing.

TRAVEL ZONES:

Available for travel in Zones 1 to 5 within the Québec City-Windsor corridor.

CLASS OF SERVICE:

Choose to travel in Economy or Business class. The Multi Pass – Business is also valid in Economy class.

HOW TO PURCHASE:

Bookings may be made online at viarail.ca or through our mobile apps, by phone, or at a VIA Rail station.

HOW TO BOOK ONLINE:

  • Log into your profile or create one prior to booking.
  • Book your one-way or round-trip ticket for travel within the valid period and zone of your rail pass.
  • On the "Passengers Information" screen, select Rail pass as the "Discount Type" and enter the 13-digit serial number of your rail pass in the "Serial Number" field.
  • Your trip will be repriced, and the applicable number of credits will be deducted from your rail pass, if your trip meets the conditions of your rail pass.

UPGRADES:

If you purchased the Multi Pass to travel in Economy Class, you will be able to upgrade to Business class with a 50% discount on the best available fare, on a trip by trip basis.

EXCHANGES:

Travel credits are exchangeable and refundable prior to departure without service charge.

HOW TO EXCHANGE AN EXISTING BOOKING:

Login to your profile, access your original booking and then proceed to make the changes for your desired date, train and departure time. Please note that you must still select the appropriate fare family when making changes. You can also cancel online your original booking if you wish. It is recommended that you ensure space in the applicable fare class is available on the desired departure prior to changing your original booking. Any changes or cancellations must be done prior to the departure time of your original booking.

If you have a paper ticket issued by a VIA Rail station, please contact VIA directly at 1 888 VIA-RAIL (1 888 842-7245) or TTY 1 800 268-9503 (hearing impaired) or go to any VIA station to make the changes directly with a VIA agent. Your ticket must be changed prior to the departure time of your original booking.

REFUNDS:

The pass is refundable with a $50 service charge if no credit has been used, the pass is not expired, and no tickets booked have been cancelled after the applicable train's scheduled departure.

TRANSFERS:

Fully transferable, allowing a different person to travel with each credit, simultaneously or not regardless of the itinerary.

OTHER STANDARD CONDITIONS:

VIA Rail can limit the quantities sold of these passes.

Use of a rail pass when government-issued photo ID does not match the name of the passenger on the ticket or without valid photo ID may result in the immediate cancellation of the Pass.

Remaining or unused credits at the expiration date of a rail pass are not refundable, non-transferable or exchangeable.

The following practices may result in the immediate cancellation of the Pass:

  • Duplicate bookings on the same train or on multiple departures for the same date, or failure to cancel an unused booking prior to train departure.
  • Illogical bookings, such as departing from two different places when it would be impossible to travel on all legs of such trips.
  • Use of a rail pass when government-issued photo ID does not match name of the passenger on the ticket or without valid photo ID.

Earn VIA Préférence point on purchase of this pass (points are calculated on the value of the pass at the time of purchase and not on the individual tickets)

AGE REQUIREMENTS:

Youth from 12 to 25 years old with valid proof of age and photo ID, or those aged 26 years old or older with a valid student card or an ISIC card can purchase the Youth Pass.

Select a validity period of 15, 30 or 60 days as well as the desired first date of travel.

Six (6), 12 or unlimited credits are available when purchasing.

TRAVEL ZONES:

Valid for travel everywhere in Canada throughout the VIA Rail network.

CLASS OF SERVICE:

Select the Economy or Escape fare in Economy class.

Upgrades to Business class, Touring class or Berth accommodations are available at 40% off of best available fare. Upgrades to cabins are also offered at 25% off of best available fare. A travel credit will be deducted when upgrading with your pass. Not applicable to Prestige.

Commuter pass

  • The 20 one-way trip Commuter ePass can be purchased at any time, even up to six months in advance.
  • Limited quantity.
  • ePass credits issued are non-transferable. Only the passenger named on the ePass may use the credit.
  • A valid booking and ticket are required for travel. Standees are not permitted.
  • Upon request, the passenger must present ID matching the name printed on the ticket issued with a Commuter ePass.
  • Each travel credit is valid for a one-way trip on any VIA Rail train* in Economy class in either direction between the two cities shown on the ePass or points in between.
  • ePass credits will only be accepted within the 30-day validity period indicated on the ePass confirmation/receipt. The 20 one-way trip Commuter ePass is valid for a 30-day period, starting on the date determined by the customer at time of purchase.
  • Passengers not in possession of a valid ticket using an ePass credit as described above will be required to purchase a ticket at the applicable fare on board the train.
  • A valid rail ticket issued using the ePass credit is required.
  • The Commuter ePass is refundable if it has not expired, if no trips have been made using it, and if no tickets booked with it have been cancelled after the applicable train's scheduled departure. There is a service charge of $50 plus taxes for a refund. Once it has been used, a pass cannot be refunded.
  • Earn VIA Préférence points on purchase of this pass (points are calculated on the value of the pass at the time of purchase and not on the individual tickets).

How to modify an existing booking made using a Commuter ePass

  • Log in to your profile, access your original booking, and then make the changes for your desired date, train, and departure time. Please note that you must still select Economy Plus when making changes. If you wish, you may also cancel your original booking online. It is recommended to check that space is available in Economy Plus on your desired train prior to changing your original booking. Any changes or cancellations must be made prior to the departure time of your original booking.

Additional conditions for the use of the Commuter ePass EXTRA

  • Purchasing a Commuter ePass EXTRA gives you access to Business lounges under these conditions:
  • The traveller must present his/her boarding pass.
  • Applicable in stations where VIA Rail has a Business lounge.
  • Access is subject to space availability.
  • Additional guests may accompany the Commuter ePass EXTRA holder ($10 service charge per person, payable at the Business lounge; free access for children under the age of 12).
  • Children under the age of 12 must always be accompanied by an adult.
