Looking for an inspiring winter getaway? A fairytale town—especially blanketed in snow—Québec City is the perfect destination to treat yourself to a few days of wonder. And since almost everything is within walking distance of Québec City's train station, it’s easy to stroll along storied cobblestone streets and let yourself be embraced by the city’s European charm.
Whether you’re looking for great restaurants, culture, outdoor activities or festivals, you can cover a lot of ground in 72 hours when exploring the many facets of Québec City in winter. Here are 4 ways to fully enjoy a long weekend in the capital right off the train.
1. Indulge in local flavours
Renowned for its rich culinary culture, Québec City is sure to please foodies and food lovers alike. The local cuisine combines French traditions and products from Québec’s terroir, including its famous maple syrup. And while sugaring-off season may be short, you can enjoy it year-round in the heart of the city at Petite Cabane à sucre or at brunch in a rustic restaurant like Au Petit Chalet, both of which are about a 20-minute walk from the Québec City train station. And since no trip in the capital is complete without our local star, you can get your fill with a divine poutine prepared according to the rules of the art at Ashton or in any other gravy hotspot!
In the evening, savour the creativity of chefs who showcase local flavours at the many excellent restaurants, like the cozy Lapin Sauté, right next to La Petite Cabane à sucre. Explore the sought-after eateries on charming Saint-Paul Street, like Chez Rioux & Pettigrew, located just 500 meters from the train station. Take in a unique gourmet experience in a place with a colourful history like Restaurant Tanière3or feast on local ingredients in an eco-friendly restaurant like Restaurant Alentours.
The most difficult decision will be choosing from among so many top restaurants (another good reason to linger for a few dinners!).

2. Have fun from morning to night
One thing’s for sure, Québec City never hibernates! In winter, the city is more festive than ever. If you’re lucky enough to be in town during the legendary Carnaval de Québec (the next edition will take place from February 7 to 16, 2025), you can admire the beautiful ice sculptures and watch the canoe races on the frozen river, all while sipping a glass of “caribou,” the official drink of the event. Even beyond the Carnaval, magic reigns supreme in the city.
The Quartier Petit Champlain,, with its brightly lit pedestrian streets and enchanting decor, is the perfect place for a memorable stroll (and a shopping spree), with the majestic Fairmount Château Frontenacas a backdrop. Linger in the many cafés, boutiques and galleries in Old Québec, and leave with treasures handcrafted by local artisans: glassware, jewellery, hats, and so much more. You can also pop over to the legendary Grande Allée, a stone’s throw away, with a wide variety of bars and restaurants, some of which have heated domes where you can enjoy a cocktail and an al fresco meal in winter. No one will be left out in the cold!
3. Fill up on inspiration
Québec City offers a variety of activities that invite you to travel back in time, while enjoying the present in good company. If culture is what you’re looking for, choices abound. The Musée de la civilisation, a 15-minute walk from the train station, welcomes various exhibitions and activities that take a fresh look at the world and society.
To immerse yourself in the city’s rich history, head to the Plains of Abraham—where some of the great battles between the French and British forces took place in the 18th century — and visit the Citadelle, the largest British fortress in North America.
Don’t miss taking an unforgettable stroll through Old Québec, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and admire the cobblestone streets and historic architecture that tell the story of the city’s soul.
For a family outing or to bring out the kid in you, the Aquarium du Québec is another great option. Get up close and personal with seals, polar bears and many more aquatic creatures.
4. Get a breath of fresh air
In Québec City, you can enjoy the great outdoors without ever leaving the city. Be sure to save at least one day to play outside.
Young and old alike will have a blast hurtling down the century-old slide at Terrasse Dufferin. Or, you might prefer lacing up a pair of skates and gliding along the 358-metre ice skating rink on the Plains of Abraham. The thrill of outdoor skating continues into the evening on Place D’Youville’s illuminated rink, which at times looks like an icy dance floor!
Those who are more adventurous can even try ice canoeing while taking in breathtaking views of the city. Then, to relax after a busy day, there’s nothing better than unwinding in an urban spa along the St. Lawrence River, like Strøm.
Finally, for a truly extraordinary experience, spoil yourself with a visit to or an overnight stay at the Ice Hotela one-of-a-kind establishment in North America and only a 20-minute shuttle ride from downtown. There are so many amazing ways to experience winter at its best… and nowhere better than here!
