Privacy Policy

The purpose of the VIA Rail Canada (“VIA Rail”) Privacy Policy is to govern the collection, use and disclosure of personal information in compliance with the requirements set out in the Federal Government’s PRIVACY ACT.

The Information That We Collect

VIA Rail uses a variety of methods to collect voluntary information, including information that is provided by our customers and information that is gathered through customer surveys and general feedback.

The types of personal information that we collect include names, contact information, identification information and credit information. Credit card information is used for billing purposes only. We may record calls to or from our Customer Service Representatives for the purposes of accuracy, performance reviews, training and general quality assurance.

How We Use This Information

The information is used to aid in the provision of our various products and services, including customer service, accounting, billing, collection and marketing of other products and services.

VIA Rail may use aggregate or anonymous information, which cannot be linked to identifiable individuals, for a variety of purposes and for its own use or the use of third parties.

Who We Share This Information With

VIA Rail does not share personal information with any third parties, except as provided for by this Policy. VIA Rail may provide personal information to its subcontractors and professional advisors (which are bound by privacy obligations) in order for them to assist VIA Rail with respect to the uses authorized herein.

Security

Personal information is stored in a combination of paper and electronic files, which are protected by security measures that are appropriate to the nature of the information.

Access to Personal Information

Individuals may review their personal information contained in VIA Rail’s files by contacting VIA Rail’s Access to Information and Privacy Unit. If an individual believes that any of the personal information pertaining to that individual is inaccurate, VIA Rail will make the appropriate corrections. Cookies

VIA uses cookies for the convenience of our users. Cookies automatically authenticate the user. A user can access VIA Rail’s web site with the cookie feature turned off; but by doing so, the user may be required to provide username and password information on multiple occasions. VIA also uses cookies to track users’ visits, and uses that information to improve the users’ experience.
