HOPE, BRITISH COLUMBIA

Hope, surrounded by the snowcapped Cascade Mountains, is the eastern gateway to the Fraser Valley and is about 150 km east of Vancouver. All roads from the rest of B.C. and Canada must go through Hope to get to the coast. It is here that the mighty Fraser River makes the transition from the Fraser Canyon to the Fraser Valley.

The Othello Tunnels, which are only a five minute drive from downtown, are a must-see for any visitor to Hope. The tunnels, once a part of the Kettle Valley Railway, preserve a unique section of the abandoned Kettle Valley Railway and are now a trailhead for a popular mountain bike route. Walkers and cyclists can explore the four tunnels and two bridges that give access to the stunning canyon gorge. Other nearby popular destinations include the Japanese Friendship Gardens, Hell's Gate Airtram, Manning Provincial Park and Minter Gardens. Hope is home to over 30 large wooden sculptures in the downtown core. These give rise to Hope's title as the Chainsaw Carving Capital.
