Things to see & do in Montréal

Marchés publics de Montréal
Montréal offers the earth's good bounty in four major public markets: Atwater Market (downtown), Lachine Market (Lachine), Jean-Talon Market (Montréal North) and Maisonneuve Market (Montréal East). Each one offers unbeatably fresh fruits and vegetables, the aromas of baking bread, organic products, and that vibrant cosmopolitan ambience that only Montréal can offer. Don't miss the fine grocery stores and cheese shops too!
Sir George-Etienne Cartier National Historic Site of Canada
Cartier House is a unique meeting place, an intimate setting where you can discover a great figure of Canadian history. George-Etienne Cartier (1814-73), was a Father of Confederation, politician, lawyer and businessman who lived in a tumultuous period of profound social change. From the moment visitors cross the threshold of the upper-middle-class Victorian residence inhabited by the Cartier family, they are returned into the past to relive the everyday life of an entire household. The Sir George-Etienne Cartier National Historic Site of Canada is transformed into an interactive museum-theatre, filled with surprises and delights for people of every age! Depending on the season, theatrical dramatizations may offer visitors lessons in etiquette or show them how to prepare for a Victorian Christmas in an authentic setting.
Lachine Canal National Historic Site of Canada
The port of entry for the canal network linking the Atlantic Ocean to the heart of the continent, the Lachine Canal was the forerunner of the transportation revolution in Canada in the early 19th century. It also played a decisive role in the industrial development of Montreal, notably as a supplier of hydraulic power. Finally, this corridor became one of the main manufacturing production centres in Canada, from the beginning of industrialization in the middle of the 19th century until the Second World War. For the last 25 years, millions of cyclists and pedestrians have visited the canal's banks where countless details evoke the past. Today, this site is entering a new phase of its existence. An important revitalization project, begun in 1997, is strengthening its heritage vocation. And pleasure boating was reintroduced in 2002.
