Conditions of use for the VIA Rail Commuter passes and ePass
- The 20 one-way trip Commuter Pass or ePass can be purchased at any time, even up to 6 months in advance.
- Travel coupons or ePass credits issued as part of a Commuter Pass or ePass are non-transferable. Only the passenger named on the travel coupon may use the coupon or credit.
- For the Commuter ePass, a valid booking and ticket are required for travel. Standees are not permitted.
- Upon request, the passenger must present ID matching the name printed on the travel coupons or ticket issued with a Commuter ePass.
- Each travel coupon or credit is valid for a one-way trip on any VIA Rail train* in Economy class in either direction between the two cities shown on the coupon or points in between.
- Holders of the Toronto – Oshawa pass and ePass: Please note that your Commuter pass will not be valid on trains 66 and 67. View our online schedules to confirm your preferred departure.
- Travel coupons or ePass credits will only be accepted within the 30-day validity period indicated on each coupon or ePass confirmation/receipt. The 20 one-way trip Commuter Pass or ePass is also valid for a 30-day period, starting on the date determined by the customer at time of purchase. The Monthly Commuter Pass is valid for one calendar month, starting on the first day of the month and ending on the last day. Expired coupons are null and void.
- Passengers not in possession of a valid travel coupon or ticket using an ePass credit as described above will be required to purchase a ticket at the applicable fare on board the train.
- One travel coupon is required for each one-way trip and must be detached by the VIA Service Manager. In the case of ePass credits, a valid rail ticket, issued using the ePass credit, is required.
-
Commuter passes are refundable only if they have not been used and if the coupon booklet is intact. The Commuter ePass is refundable if it has not expired; no trips have been made using it; and no tickets booked with it have been cancelled after the applicable train’s scheduled departure. There is a service charge of $50 plus taxes. Once it has been used, a pass cannot be refunded. No refund will be given for lost or stolen Commuter passes.
How to exchange an existing booking made using a Commuter ePass:
- If your paper ticket has not yet been issued, log in to your profile and cancel your original booking, then make a new booking for your desired train and departure time. It is recommended that you ensure space in “Economy - regular fare” class is available on the desired departing train prior to cancelling your original booking.
- If your paper ticket has been issued, please contact VIA directly at 1 888 VIA-RAIL (1 888 842-7245) or TTY 1 800 268-9503 (hearing impaired) or go to any VIA station to make the changes directly with a VIA agent. Your ticket must be exchanged prior to the scheduled departure time of the train on your original booking.
-
Note that in both cases, the original booking must be cancelled prior to the scheduled departure time of the originally booked train – otherwise, the credit is forfeited.
*Unless specified otherwise on your commuter pass.
