VIA Rail begin phasing in e-boarding passes on its trains, beginning with those offering service in the Québec City – Windsor Corridor.

We’ll e-mail you a boarding pass with a bar code whenever you book a seat on an eligible train. You can present a printed version of this e-boarding pass or display its barcode on your mobile device, along with a government-issued photo ID upon request, at the boarding gate and on board the train.

For you, this means one less pre-boarding line-up, and an even more stress-free travel experience.

Who will receive an e-boarding pass?


An e-boarding pass will be e-mailed to all passengers who book a one-way or round trip exclusively within Québec City – Windsor Corridor on eligible trains on or after August 7th.

Please note, however, that you will NOT receive one if:

  • Your reservation is for 6 people or more, as these cannot be booked online;
  • You buy your ticket at the station;
  • Your reservation is a special offer that requires you to present ID to a sales agent.

 

Why is VIA Rail switching to an e-boarding pass service?


The e-boarding service will allow us to offer passengers a more seamless and stress-free travel experience.

How will these e-boarding passes differ from regular ones?


An e-boarding pass will have a bar code, which means you have the option of either printing out your e-boarding pass at your convenience or simply displaying the bar code on your mobile device.

What type of device can I use to access my e-boarding pass?


You can access your e-boarding pass from almost any mobile device equipped with an Internet browser as well as data and e-mail services. Your wireless provider may charge an extra fee for these features. Consult your mobile device user manual or your wireless service provider for more details.

What should I do if I lose or forget my boarding pass?


If you have an e-boarding pass, simply print out another copy of your e-mail.

What is the difference between a booking confirmation and an e-boarding pass?


You receive a booking confirmation when you complete your booking on viarail.ca. You can print this confirmation, but it cannot be used to board the train. Your purchase receipt and e-boarding pass will be sent to you in a separate e-mail. The e-boarding pass has a barcode on it and the phrase “PRINT this boarding pass.” You will need to present this e-boarding pass to the on-board crew.

Will a regular boarding pass system still be in place?


Yes, both the electronic and paper boarding pass systems will be in effect. The on-board crew on eligible trains are now equipped with electronic scanners that will be working for both electronic boarding passes and paper boarding passes.
