John Marginson, Chief Operating Officer, Operations

As Chief Operating Officer, John Marginson oversees all aspects of VIA’s business relating to maintenance, engineering, fleet and inventory management, as well as train operations, ensuring all trains are run reliably and safely. He is also responsible for the successful implementation of the equipment and infrastructure elements of VIA’s Capital Investment Program, critical components of this $923 million undertaking, the largest capital project in VIA’s history.

After finishing his studies at Concordia University, Mr Marginson started his career at Canadian National in 1972. He joined VIA in 1983 and was made senior manager of the Corporation’s first maintenance centre in 1985. Over the years, he held several positions at VIA until he was appointed Chief Operating Officer in 2005. Among his most important achievements were the major overhaul of VIA’s stainless steel cars and the introduction of VIA’s Renaissance fleet and General Electric locomotives.
