VIA Maintenance Centre donates recycling profits to elementary school

For Immediate Distribution - December 4, 2008

MONTREAL, December 4, 2008 – Employees from VIA Rail Canada’s Montréal Maintenance Centre Green Team donated $10,000 to the École Jeanne-Leber, in the South-West borough neighbourhood of Pointe-Saint-Charles. This was the second donation to the school in 2008 by VIA employees, who decided once again to turn over their profits from can collecting and metal recycling. The check was presented to École Jeanne-Leber principal Christian Amesse today by Alain Deslauriers, Supervisor at the VIA Rail Maintenance Centre.

These donations will be used to improve the school’s library and to start construction on a school playground adapted to children with special needs. What’s more, as Alain Deslauriers points out, “Thanks to this effort by our Green Team, employees are really motivated to manage can collection, because not only are they helping the environment, they’re also contributing to a worthy cause”. The Green Team hopes to continue this partnership with the École Jeanne-Leber in upcoming years.

VIA Rail Green Teams were set up in 2001 with the goal of promoting environmentally responsible action in the workplace.
As Canada's national passenger rail service, VIA Rail Canada's mandate is to provide efficient, environmentally sustainable and cost effective passenger transportation services, both in Canada's business corridor and in remote and rural regions of the country.
