At VIA, we believe we have a role to play in building a better world for future generations, and we strive to make a real difference in the communities we call home. Often, that difference is in the interest of the environment; other times, it is through other types of community service.
For example, VIA Rail and Youth Science Foundation Canada partnered to create EnviroExpo, a national competition in which students combine the disciplines of art and science to address today’s environmental challenges.
VIA is also a proud partner of Kids Help Phone, Canada’s only nation-wide counselling, information and referral service, available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, by phone or by Internet for all Canadian youths.
Through the communities it serves, the partnerships it forges and the actions it takes, VIA takes the environment and Canadian communities to heart.
Should you, as a member of a community VIA travels thru, have a concern related to the environment, safety or security, please contact us using the following number:
Safety, Security and Risk Management – Community Involvement Line
It is important to note that you must leave a voice mail and that this number should not be used for emergencies. In an emergency, please contact your local law enforcement or first responders.
Elimination of Whistling at Public Crossings
Municipalities wishing to have train whistling eliminated at a crossing owned by VIA Rail Canada Inc. (VIA) should evaluate the current conditions and issues affecting the crossing before contacting VIA. If the municipality's assessment indicates that there are no circumstances that require whistling to be retained, municipalities must then follow Transport Canada's Procedure & Conditions For Eliminating Whistling At Public Crossings. Municipalities may contact VIA using its Community Involvement number mentioned above.
